Anchor Institution Initiative

The University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) is committed to being a good neighbor and partner in our community. UMSL lives this commitment by intentionally applying the University’s place-based operational and educational assets in partnership with community to build a strong North County and Saint Louis region.

Leaders across the University identified four core areas where UMSL can support our local community - Economic Development, Housing and Community Development, Education, Health and Services. To view more about our Anchor Institution efforts click here.

UMSL Anchor Institution Framework

The four pillars under the Excellence in Community Engagement and Economic Development section in the UMSL Strategic Plan express UMSL’s efforts towards:

  • Local Hiring
  • Local Purchasing
  • Partnering with Local School Districts
  • And other Community-Focused Projects

On issues of health, services, and education, UMSL has a number of areas of expertise and services open to the public. From mental health to medical health services available through SSM Healthcare at UMSL’s Patient Care Facility to Eye Care, residents can access a number of healthcare services. Across colleges and university administration, UMSL has partnerships with schools on literacy, social emotional training, and the transition to college to name a few.
