Starting with FS2024 the department will transition the initial language from C++ to Python.
This will impact three Cmp Sci courses
- 1250 will be in Python. The impact on the course is small, no changes other than some syntax.
- 2250 will be in Python. The impact is larger as more Python-specifics will be included. Coverage of data structures will be the same except the different language.
- 2750 will be phased out after SP25 and replaced with 2751 and 3260 to be taken as neended depending on your major.
Bachelor programs using 2750 will be updated accordingly.

Changes in Cmp Sci 1250 and Implications
EFFECTIVE for FS24 Cmp Sci 1250 introductory language will change from C++ to Python. Other than different language syntax, the course will not change.
Courses Impacted: Cmp Sci 1250, 2250, and 2750. Minimal/no impact on other courses.
Cmp Sci 1250 and 2250 will now use Python, and Cmp Sci 2750 will be phased out and replaced with Cmp Sci 2751 and 3260. Refer to the corresponding upcoming changes in your degree program – students with Cmp Sci 2750 already passed or passed during the transition should follow the prior program requirements.
There is no impact on non-majors taking our Cmp Sci 1250 and not following with Cmp Sci 2250 other than different syntax in the course.

Transition Recommendation for entering SP25
- Cmp Sci 2750 will be offered for the last time, should be taken by anyone needing 2750 who has completed or transferred Cmp Sci 2250 in C/C++.
Transition Recommendation for entering FS24
- Passed Cmp Sci 2750 – no impact
- Do not take the new courses Cmp Sci 2751 nor 3260.
- Passed Cmp Sci 2250
- No impact if 2750 not needed/desired.
- If 2750 still needed/desired, take 2750 any time by SP25; do not take the new courses Cmp Sci 2751 nor 3260.
- Passed Cmp Sci 1250 and still need at least Cmp Sci 2250
- Take Cmp Sci 2250 in SS24 or FS24.
- If Cmp Sci 2750 is also needed/desired, then follow up with Cmp Sci 2750 by SP25.
- Transferring with credit for Cmp Sci 1250 (transferred by the start of FS24)
- If the transferred course was with Python:
- Wait with Cmp Sci 2250 until SP25 when it will be offered in Python.
- If the transferred course was with C++:
- Same as #3 above.
- If the transferred course was with Python:
- Not taken/transferred Cmp Sci 1250 yet
- Take Cmp Sci 1250 in SS24 and follow #3 above, or
- Take Cmp Sci 1250 starting FS24.
