Lee Slocum is Curators’ Distinguished Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Her work focuses on the complex interactions between individuals and the criminal justice system and draws on the life-course perspective to explore the consequences of these and other adverse life experiences on perceptions and behaviors, particularly offending. She is actively involved in community-based crime reduction programs and collaborative projects with local criminal justice agencies and community-based organizations. Recent projects include exploring the experiences and decision-making processes of public safety communications (911) personnel, understanding how people with different life experiences conceptualize safety, and examining the impact of victims’ contact with the criminal justice system on their police-related attitudes and experiences. Professor Slocum has served as a University of Missouri Presidential Engagement Fellow and a Creating Whole Communities Research Fellow. She was the 2023 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creativity.
