Student Staff Employment Positions with Campus Recreation

The building manager is one of our positions where students are promoted into. The building manager assists with the management and operation of the Recreation and Wellness Center during operational hours and/or special events. The BM supervises member/participant use of recreational areas in the absence or in the presence of the Director or Assistant Directors. They are responsible for all of the Recreation and Wellness Center’s day-to-day operations when Directors are on & off site. The BMs unlock/lock exterior doors and other areas of the Recreation and Wellness facility as required at the beginning/end of operational hours and turn area lights on/off as necessary. The building managers also ensure the presence of adequate staff for facility operation and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for RWC members and guests.

 

Climbing wall attendants monitor all participants in and around the Climbing Center. They maintain a high level of safety at all times for the participants and other employees and rent, inspect and return all equipment. Climbing wall attendants instruct members in class and clinic formats, including belay certifications and participate in staff meetings and other ongoing trainings. Climbing wall attendants understand and enforce all policies, procedures, rules and regulations, while assisting in programmatic events and initiatives that will enhance building and operations. The attendants change/replace bouldering and climbing wall routes and holds to keep the area fresh for new and returning participants. The staff at the climbing wall perform daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cleaning efforts including, but not limited to the washing of hand holds, scrubbing of wall surfaces, and disinfecting rental equipment.

The fitness attendant performs fitness orientations and assessments as necessary to patrons that need and request it. The FA monitors safe conditions in fitness area, while providing customer service, guided tours, and greets and directs patrons as needed. The fitness attendant performs a daily routine cleaning of fitness areas to include but not limited to; detail cleaning of fitness equipment, re-racking weights, mopping of stretch mats and floor, and vacuuming of debris throughout all fitness areas. The FAs also assist with all program organizational activities.

The fitness equipment technicians ensure operation of machinery by completing preventative maintenance duties and troubleshoot issues and locate sources of problems through observing mechanical devices and listening for problems. The FETs demonstrate exceptional communication to inform supervisor of all equipment maintenance issues, while performing daily routine cleaning of fitness areas to include but not limited to: detail cleaning of fitness equipment, assemble new equipment, mopping of stretch mats and floor, and vacuuming of debris throughout all fitness areas. The fitness equipment technicians maintain a clean and safe working environment for all patrons of the RWC.

Group fitness instructors lead fitness and wellness classes for patrons, which can include instructing aerobic-based group fitness to students, faculty/staff and community members. The instructors enforce policies and procedures set forth by the Recreation & Wellness Center in order to provide a safe and enjoyable class. The group fitness instructors assume a leadership role as a professional in the area of exercise and group fitness and teach class with energy and enthusiasm.

Our guest service staff greets patrons upon entry of the building. They provide quality customer assistance to patrons through providing equipment to patrons who present a valid UMSL ID or Recreation and Wellness Member card. The staff reports appropriate information (name, ID number, equipment, inventory number) to a building manager and/or professional staff when a patron fails to return equipment, or equipment has been damaged by excessive abuse. Guest service staff answers walk-up inquiries regarding hours of operation, activity schedule, racquetball court reservations, etc. They maintain accurate inventory of equipment available for loan and keep equipment arranged in neat, orderly fashion.

Intramural officials assist with the management and operation of the Intramural Program by officiating competitive contests and activities, while possessing a high level of self-discipline, independence and responsibility. The IM officials possess knowledge of the rules of the game and officiating mechanics necessary to enforce the rules and ensures the actions of participants, coaches, and spectators are in compliance with the rules of the game/activity. Officials encourage good sportsmanship and take appropriate measures to ensure a safe environment for participants. This includes, but is not limited to, preventing use of illegal/broken equipment, inspecting courts, fields and playing areas for unsafe conditions. Intramural officials assist in the marketing and promotion of Recreation and Wellness Center programs, while enforcing the rules of play, remain aware of the inherent risk of injury that competition poses to participants.

Intramural sport supervisors are another one of our positions where student staff are promoted into. The supervisors assist with the management and operation of the Intramural program during operational hours and/or special events by directing scheduled games, assigning officials and scorekeepers to contests and monitoring daily activities. Intramural supervisors ensure the actions of participants, coaches, spectators, etc. are in compliance with game/activity, and Intramural rules/guidelines/policies.  Supervisors ensure the presence of adequate student staff (i.e., scorekeepers, game/contest officials, support staff) for activity programming and respond appropriately to questions regarding hours of operation, league schedules, game/contest rules, etc.

Lifeguards recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies and provide emergency care as required until emergency medical services arrive. Our lifeguards help prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, while inspecting the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment. LGs enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations and perform chemical tests to maintain proper water chemistry and documentation. Lifeguards also complete records and reports and participate in monthly in-service trainings.

Our marketing assistant helps plan, create, schedule, and analyze content for each of our social media platforms. They will help promote the RWC via social media, tablings, presentations, and more. The marketing assistant may serve as the photographer and videographer for departmental needs, while producing marketing materials for each program area within the department. The marketing assistant helps in staffing department special events and collaborative events with other departments on campus. Some experience in design, web design, marketing, or other related experience is highly encouraged.

Member services is another one of our positions where students are promoted into. Our member services staff has cash handling responsibilities including sales by cash, check, credit card, and payroll deduction, performing reconciliations and deposits. Member services staff also complete all transactions and data entry via our CSI software and assist with admission, locker, activity/programs and membership fee sales. The staff perform a variety of routine cleaning tasks at the member services desk and complete all records and reports necessary for pro shop desk operations.

Personal trainers conduct Fitness Assessments & fitness equipment orientations and prescribe individual workout programs, while providing safe exercise recommendations to clients based on Campus Recreation guidelines. PTs conduct a health history consultation maintaining a high level of confidentiality. Personal trainers will need to record and organize all client workouts and information and demonstrate and coach clients on the proper use of cardiovascular and strength equipment.

Our swim instructors teach aquatic based group or private swimming and water safety lessons to students, faculty/staff and community members. They enforce policies and procedures set forth by the RWC in order to provide a safe and enjoyable class and assume a leadership role as a professional in the area of swimming and water safety. Swim instructors teach classes with energy and enthusiasm for patrons to learn. Classes are routinely taught on Tuesday & Thursday evenings along with Saturday mornings. Our swim instructors will need to maintain American Red Cross (or equivalent) Certifications in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Standard First Aid.

Student custodians help provide care, cleaning, and routine maintenance of all the RWC spaces. There is daily cleaning involved along with restocking of areas and custodial closets. The student custodians work independently while on shift and follow their own task list to complete their duties.
