UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN GERONTOLOGY

The Undergraduate certificate in Gerontological Studies requires 15 credit hours in gerontology. Students must have courses from at least two of four topic areas: social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and nursing. A complete list of gerontology courses is available from the Director of Gerontology. The undergraduate certificate in gerontological studies is particularly appropriate for students majoring in anthropology, economics, communication, psychology, sociology, nursing, criminology, physical education, and social work. Students can earn this certificate while pursuing a baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree.

Students are strongly encouraged to apply for the Undergraduate Certificate program as soon as they have determined an interest in this area. Applying early allows students the benefits of full academic advising, so that students are aware of when appropriate gerontology courses will be offered.

Requirements: Undergraduate enrollment at UMSL and 15 credit hours (from those listed below)

Courses must be chosen from at least two of the four topic areas listed below.

No more than three credit hours from Research/Practicum Experience courses will be allowed. The student must have the approval of the Director of the Gerontology Program before enrolling in a course.

Courses taken to fulfill the requirements may not be taken on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

New courses are continually being added so it is advisable to check with the program Director, Thomas Meuser at (314) 516-5421 each term. Applications and advising are available in the Gerontology Program Office, 406 Tower.
