TAPPMEYER NAMED MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
Steve Tappmeyer, former men's head basketball coach at Northwest Missouri State University, has been named the new head men's basketball coach at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. UMSL Director of Athletics Lori Flanagan introduced Tappmeyer at a news conference Wednesday at the Mark Twain Athletic & Fitness Center. "We are delighted to name Steve as our new coach and welcome him and his family to St. Louis," said Flanagan. "Steve is an excellent choice for UMSL from every perspective – in terms of the basketball component, his ability to serve as a mentor and his skills as a proven leader. He is the right coach to lead UMSL men's basketball to the next level." Tappmeyer coached 21 seasons (1989-2009) at Northwest Missouri State with an overall record of 408-208 (.662). The all-time winningest coach in program history, he directed the Bearcats to 10 NCAA Tournament berths and three regular season and four conference tournament championships. (More information)

MERCANTILE TO EXHIBIT ENGELHARDT CARTOONS
For 35 years, Tom Engelhardt drew editorial cartoons for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Starting in 1962, Engelhardt drew five cartoons a week until his last piece on Dec. 31, 1997. His extraordinary work attacked the status quo and the social injustices of the time, and he was seen as a champion of equality. With artistic precision and often biting satire, he chronicled the last four decades of the tumultuous 20th century — the civil rights movement, busing, the Vietnam War, poverty, crime, big business, international relations, censorship, Watergate and politics in all of its forms. Some of the more than 8,000 cartoons that comprise Engelhardt's career will be on exhibit April 24 to May 30 at the St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, One University Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63121. NURSING DEAN ELECTED SECRETARY OF NATIONAL GROUP
Juliann Sebastian (pictured), dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, was recently elected to serve a two-year term as secretary of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. The announcement was made at the AACN's 2010 Spring Annual Meeting held in Washington at the end of March. Sebastian, of Creve Coeur, Mo., feels honored and privileged to have the opportunity to serve AACN as secretary on the board of directors. "This organization's mission of promoting excellence in baccalaureate and higher-degree nursing is critical to our future in health care," Sebastian said. "We must ensure the provision of safe and excellent patient care, health promotion, illness prevention and advanced practice nursing primary care services and providing leadership in care delivery and health-care innovations. I look forward to working with colleagues also concerned about these issues and collaborating to find ways to make real contributions to nursing education, research, practice and leadership in health care for the future." ST. LOUIS PUBLIC RADIO SETS REVENUE RECORD, WINS AWARDS
St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU keeps breaking records and winning awards. The station's recent spring membership campaign raised a record $437,000 from a record 3,500 pledges. Combine that total with the money raised during the fall 2009 membership campaign, and it registers 12 percent more revenue than three membership campaigns in the previous fiscal year. Station management credits the station's listeners, especially new members who totaled 1,300 for this drive. "Considering that we eliminated our For the Love of KWMU campaign in February and still raised substantially more money with two drives than we did previously with three drives, it is remarkable," said General Manager Tim Eby. "Our listeners have proven, once again, how much they value St. Louis Public Radio's service to the community." On the heels of this news comes the announcement that St. Louis Public Radio has won two 2010 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association. News producer Adam Allington was honored in the Audio Sports Reporting category for his story, "Big Business in Midsummer Classic," and Madalyn Painter, director of interactive media, earned recognition in the Web Site category for the station's site, stlpublicradio.org. The awards recognize excellence in radio production for large market stations in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.
