Photographs in the Globe Democrat Collection

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat photograph collection contains thousands of images taken by the newspaper during the the 1920s -1980s. Images are filed at the library by broad subjects (sports, education, and so on) as well as by proper name.

The majority of the photograph collection has not been digitized, but are available to researchers at the Rare Book Reading Room for study. Photograph files are retrieved by library staff from secure storage areas.

Thanks to a grant from the Missouri State Library, and with the help of the University of Missouri Digital Library and the Missouri Library Network Corporation, the Mercantile Library has scanned and entered the collection of glass plate negatives into a searchable database on Virtually Missouri. In addition to the Glass Plates the staff of the library continue the work and are beginning to add photographs of the St. Louis Subject Photo file to the same database. Access to digitized images is available through the links provided here. Please use your browser's back button to return to this web page.Virtually Missouri Logo
