Research Security and Compliance (RSC) is about protecting the integrity, confidentiality, and value of research. RSC ensures the people, ideas, data, and technologies involved in research are safe from theft, misuse, or interference. RSC’s purpose is to create a secure environment where researchers can collaborate, innovate, and share knowledge responsibly.
Research Security Training
The federal government is in the process of implementing research security programs to protect federally funded research from foreign interference. As a result of this effort, federal agencies have been directed to require investigators to complete annual research security training within the 12 months preceding the date a grant application is submitted.
- The U.S. Department of Energy began requiring training May 1, 2025.
- National Science Foundation security training is required for applications submitted on or after Oct. 10, 2025.
Who is required to take training?
Principal investigators, co-investigators and individuals designated as key personnel on a grant application should take the training. These "covered individuals" contribute in a substantive, meaningful way to the scientific development or execution of an R&D project proposed to be carried out with an award from a federal agency.
Additional personnel may be required to complete the training in the future.
How do I take the training?
Research compliance training has been developed that complies with federal guidance and is available on the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) website. The training will take approximately one hour to complete.
The CITI Program’s Research Security combined training modules are accessible to University of Missouri personnel using single-sign-on (SSO) authentication from any computer with internet connectivity.
