Undergraduate Students

At UMSL, all students must meet with an academic advisor before enrolling in their first semester. Advisors help you plan your degree, select appropriate courses, and guide you as you progress through your academic program.

Enrollment Requirements

When registering for classes with your academic advisor, be sure to remember the following:

  • New students can only register for classes with the help of an advisor.

  • F-1 and J-1 students must maintain full-time enrollment in order to comply with visa regulations.

  • Undergraduates must enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester, 9 of which must be taken in a classroom setting. Generally speaking, you should avoid online courses and take face-to-face classes as much as possible.

  • International students cannot take composition classes online. All composition courses at UMSL must be completed in a classroom setting.

  • EAP courses noted as "required" cannot be dropped from your schedule (unless you are a visiting/exchange student). "Recommended" EAP classes are not mandatory, though students are encouraged to enroll in them.

Who Is My Advisor?

All undergraduate students are assigned to a staff advisor according to their major. When you are ready to pre-register for a tentative schedule, please email an advisor below from the college or school that houses your major. If you are a transfer student currently in the United States, you may also meet with your advisor in person.

Graduate Students

If you are a graduate or professional student, you should contact your advisor or program director to discuss your plans before registering for your first semester. Advisors and program directors help you plan your degree and select appropriate courses.

-New students can only register for classes with the help of an advisor.

-F-1 and J-1 students must maintain full-time enrollment in order to comply with visa regulations.

-Graduate students must enroll in at least 9 hours per semester, with at least 6 hours taken in a classroom setting. This exception has been waived for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022, allowing new students to register for a minimum of one on-campus class.
