Service and Philanthropy

Our definition of citizenship includes informing the community about public voting and giving back. We seek to help through service and volunteerism. UMSL views our position as a university as an opportunity to give to organizations, centers, and services that seek to better the community around them.

UMSL Month of Community Giving

Every year in October, UMSL takes part in the United Way of Greater St. Louis and the CHC Creating Healthier Communities campaigns. Combined, they are community partners to more than 250 nonprofit organizations. This is one effort to create a stronger community through collaboration, investment, and service. UMSL is a community-engaged university, and we work in many ways to strengthen and support the great work being done by our community partners to create a region where people can thrive.

"Give a little, help a lot...Each one of us individually and collectively is responsible for the community in which we live,” said Patricia Zahn, Chair of the Campaign and Director of Community Engagement & Outreach at UMSL. “We can make it a better place directly through our service, and we can help others through our charitable giving.”

The Office of Student Involvement

The Office of Student Involvement at UMSL believes volunteering is an essential component of a well-rounded and fulfilling college experience and would like to help you get involved and make a difference.  Whether you are interested in volunteering for fun and personal fulfillment, to earn service hours or as a part of a group or organization, we can assist you in that process. Through UMSL Students of Service, our programming board, we provide structured group opportunities to go into the community. For more information on university-sponsored upcoming volunteer experiences, check out UMSL-MyEngage.
