RECOGNIZED STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
A Recognized Student Organization (RSO) is an independent, student-led organization that is officially recognized by the University. Recognition provides certain benefits, including access to University facilities and eligibility to apply for Student Programming Allocation funding.
As independent organizations, RSOs are responsible for developing and maintaining their governing documents, electing officers, planning and conducting events, fundraising, managing finances, and overseeing all organizational operations in accordance with University policies and procedures.
RSOs are also responsible for complying with all applicable University Collected Rules and Regulations, the Student Organization Handbook, and any other campus policies governing recognized student organizations. This includes assuming full financial, administrative, and legal responsibility for all organizational activities.
Any financial losses, property damage, bodily injury, or other liabilities arising from an RSO's activities are the sole responsibility of the organization. The University does not provide insurance coverage for RSO-sponsored events or activities. If insurance is required for a particular event or activity, the RSO is responsible for obtaining and maintaining the appropriate coverage.
Recognition as a Recognized Student Organization requires the signed approval of the Chief Student Affairs Officer, or their designee.
STUDENT-LED DEPARTMENT FUNCTIONS
A Student-Led Department Function is a University-sponsored program or initiative that operates under the supervision of a University department. Unlike a Registered Student Organization, a Student-Led Department Function is an official University activity that operates under the University's Tax Identification Number, and all activities are considered departmental activities.
Student-Led Department Functions are responsible for complying with all University Collected Rules and Regulations, as well as all applicable University policies, procedures, and campus guidelines governing departmental operations. The sponsoring department assumes full financial, administrative, and operational responsibility for the program and its activities.
These programs provide students with opportunities to serve in leadership roles as University employees or volunteers. The sponsoring department is responsible for the oversight and success of the program through appropriate supervision, mentoring, advising, and professional development. Membership is composed primarily of UMSL students, as determined by the sponsoring department.
Because Student-Led Department Functions are official University programs rather than independent Recognized Student Organizations, they are not eligible to receive funding through the Student Programming Allocation Council (SPAC).
