How to Join

Since 1968, the University of Missouri – St. Louis Fraternity & Sorority Community has been an integral part of campus life.

With three councils consisting of 11 fraternities and sororities, our community can be one of the most significant experiences for a college student. Our 3 councils offer a variety of organizations so that any UMSL student will be able to find their place.

At UMSL, the recruitment or intake process for each of our three councils is as unique as the organizations they govern. Recruitment and intake refer broadly to the process and potential opportunities made available to a student seeking membership in one of the Greek-lettered organizations supported by the Office of Student Involvement.

To join one of UMSL's greek-lettered organizations, it is important to learn more about which council you are interested in! UMSL students are able to join organizations under the three governing councils listed below.

College Panhellenic Association

Both Panhellenic sororities participate in a partially structured recruitment process each fall semester, most commonly occurring in the week following Labor Day (Tuesday-Sunday). Registration is required to participate, and early registration is encouraged. Fall 2024 recruitment registration will open soon!

There are often opportunities to join in the Spring Semester through a process referred to as Continuous Open Bidding (COB), but this opportunity can not be guaranteed.

Interfraternity Council

Both Interfraternity Council fraternities host formal rush processes during both the Fall & Spring semesters. Chapters host a variety of recruitment events throughout the first several weeks of the semester, such as watching a sports game, meeting up at the Recreation & Wellness Center, or barbecuing with the members. No matter what, the events are designed to give potential new members the chance to get to know active chapter members and decide if membership is right for you.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

Each member group's national organization has different requirements for their Membership Intake Process. Each group will host an interest or informational rush meeting in the fall or spring semester where you can officially express your interest through your attendance and receive details as to what is required to attain membership in their group. NPHC sponsors an “NPHC 101”  program during the second week of each semester to inform prospective members about each organization.

All of our recruitment methods are mutual selection processes; meaning men and women decide which organization they would like to join and the chapters decide which individuals they will invite for membership. Although participating in any of the three processes does not guarantee membership in a fraternity/sorority, you will undoubtedly meet many new and distinctive people. If you do join a fraternity or sorority you will be a part of an active community with bonds that last a lifetime.
