Group Therapy

Group therapy offers unique benefits, including opportunities to enhance social skills, or to obtain other skills, knowledge, resources, and the mutual support and encouragement necessary for addressing a wide range of common problems in living. The group format allows members to not only learn from the facilitators but from each other, while new habits are developed and other less helpful habits are discarded. Because the format allows a clinician to work with several individuals at the same time, groups are much more affordable than individual psychotherapy.

Group therapy offered will vary based on the availability of our providers and the availability and interest of prospective group members in specific topics.  Generally, these groups are offered in either 75 or 90 minute sessions over a fixed range of weeks to an identified group of members and are closed to new members until the sessions are completed and the group is offered again.  However, other more open-ended groups for individuals waiting on an individual therapist or focused on interpersonal issues.

Groups that have been offered historically include:

  • Our Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills group for teens and their parents helps members progress in learning and applying coping skills to daily life stressors. Clients progress through a workbook alongside their guardians until graduating from the program. More information on the DBT group.
  • Our Managing Stress and Anxiety group is appropriate for individuals who are interested in obtaining skills and resources necessary for coping with daily life stress.  This group will also be helpful for clients who are on the wait list for individual therapy.   It does not require a diagnosis as it helps clients cope with a variety of mental health issues and negative emotions. More information about the Managing Stress and Anxiety group.
  • Our Break the Habit group is for individuals who are interested in freeing themselves from tobacco usage. More information about the Break the Habit group.

Interested individuals are encouraged to ask our CPS intake staff about groups that may be helpful for their specific concerns.
