Xin Wang, Ph.D.

Biography

Xin Wang received the B.Sc. degree in electrical and communications engineering from Taiyuan University of Technology, China in 2006, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA in 2008 and 2011, respectively.

In August 2025, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL), St. Louis, Missouri, USA, where he currently serves as the Chair and a tenured Full Professor of Electrical Engineering.

From 2013 to 2025, he was a tenured Full Professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), Edwardsville, Illinois, USA, and served as Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2024. Between 2020 and 2025, he directed the Basler Electric Power Systems Laboratory at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where his research focused on the design of power electronic applications and the development of automatic control strategies for power and energy systems. Prior to that, from 2011 to 2013, he was an Assistant Professor at the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) and a faculty researcher at the Oregon Renewable Energy Center (OREC), Oregon, USA.

His current research interests include power systems, power electronics, electric machines, and control problems related to smart grid, robotics, and vehicle electrification. He has authored or co-authored more than 90 archival journal and conference publications in related areas.

He has been serving on the editorial boards of many IEEE and ASME transactions, journals and conferences in power systems, industrial electronics, and automatic control areas. Prof. Xin Wang is a senior member of the IEEE, ASME. In November 2019, he was awarded the IEEE Saint Louis Section 2019 Outstanding Educator Award.

My teaching philosophy centers on empowering students to bridge theory with practice, fostering both analytical rigor and hands-on problem-solving skills. I believe in cultivating an inclusive and interactive learning environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and resilience in facing complex engineering challenges. Through active learning, real-world projects, and integration of cutting-edge research into coursework, I aim to prepare students for both academic and professional success. Collaboration and mentorship are at the core of my approach, as I view education as a partnership between instructor and student.
