Sociology is the scientific study of social behaviors, interactions, and institutions; and is the discipline that addresses the most pressing and controversial social issues of our times.

A degree in sociology prepares you for a wide variety of careers, including social service, counseling, administration and management, marketing and public relations, information technology, teaching, research, and more.

Sociology will:

  • develop your communication, cultural competence, critical thinking, community engagement and organizational leadership skills; and,
  • enable you to practice solution-based problem solving, scientific research and data analysis.

Some of the topics explored in sociology classes at UMSL include social inequality and social justice, gender, race/ethnicity, globalization, migration, urban problems, technology, public policy, deviance and crime, social movements and social change, environment, health, families and more!

The Department of Sociology offers several majors and minors, including a new Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership. We encourage you to explore these programs on our website, and send any questions to the assigned advisors. We hope you join our department!
