Message from the Office of the Chancellor

March 3, 2026 - Safety preparation – Updates to UM System Remote Work Policy

Dear Colleagues,

At the University of Missouri–St. Louis, our mission is to deliver the transformative power of a public research university to our students, our region and the state of Missouri. That mission comes to life most fully on our campus—through the relationships, collaboration and shared purpose that connect our students, faculty and staff each day.

As we look ahead, UMSL will transition to a primarily on-site work model aligned with updated UM System remote work policy, no later than August 3, 2026. This decision reflects our commitment to a vibrant campus experience and to the mentorship, innovation and engagement that best support student success and our collective impact.

I recognize that this shift will feel significant—particularly for employees who currently work remotely or in hybrid arrangements. Please know that this decision was made thoughtfully, with care for our people and a clear focus on UMSL’s long-term mission. We are committed to a deliberate and transparent transition, not an immediate or abrupt change.

Many employees are already working fully on campus, and in other areas supervisors have plans in place to support a return to campus. Over the coming weeks, vice chancellors and unit leaders will work with their teams to establish clear expectations, provide appropriate notice and support a smooth transition. Flexibility for occasional off-site work will remain part of how we operate with supervisory approval.

Under the updated policy, remote work arrangements are defined as either fully remote or hybrid, depending on how often work is performed away from campus. Any ongoing remote or hybrid arrangement will require formal review and approval at the chancellor level, and approval on an annual basis.

Our goal is to be a unified, in-person campus community—one that strengthens collaboration, professional growth and the student experience—while treating employees with respect, clarity and care throughout this process.

Human Resources will share additional details over the coming weeks and I encourage you to review the UMSL Remote Work website where you will find helpful FAQs.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and to one another. Together, we will ensure that UMSL remains a place where people come together—physically and purposefully—to solve the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Gratefully forward,

Sincerely,

Kristin Sobolik, Chancellor
