Message from the Office of the Chancellor

January 9, 2023 - Dr. Steven Berberich named vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost

Dear University Community,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Steven Berberich will serve as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Missouri–St. Louis on a permanent basis, effective immediately. This appointment follows a nationwide search led by Adella Jones and supported by the UM System Executive Recruitment team that yielded a number of strong candidates. I want to thank each of you for participating in this critical search process and the entire Search Committee for their efforts to move UMSL forward during the search.

Steve is an experienced educator, researcher and administrator who has provided tremendous support to our faculty, staff and students since coming to UMSL as provost and interim vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2021. Prior to joining UMSL, Steve served as senior vice president of academic affairs and provost at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and was professor and chair of biochemistry and molecular biology – as well as associate provost for faculty and staff affairs – at Wright State University. I am grateful to have his leadership going forward as we continue to expand our academic programs to meet the educational and workforce needs of the St. Louis region and beyond.

I again thank you for your active engagement and feedback throughout the search process and hope you will join me in welcoming Dr. Berberich as our Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost. I invite you to read more about the appointment in UMSL Daily.

Sincerely,

Kristin Sobolik
