IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS EXPERIENCING A PSYCHOLOGICAL CRISIS THAT REQUIRES EMERGENCY ATTENTION, CALL FOR HELP IMMEDIATELY!
UMSL Counseling Services can provide immediate counseling services to any student experiencing a mental health crisis*. If you are in crisis and need to be seen immediately, you can walk in during office hours (Monday - Friday 8am-5pm) to be seen by the walk in counselor. If possible, please call ahead to let the receptionist know you are in crisis and need to be seen immediately.
*A mental health crisis involves any situation in which you believe you may be an immediate harm to yourself or someone else or have been recently physically or sexually assaulted.
If you are with someone who is in crisis, it may be helpful to call us and then walk with the person to the Counseling Services office at 131 Millennium Student Center (located behind The Nosh cafeteria, in the same office with Health Services).
In cases where it would be dangerous for the person to walk to Counseling Services, we will arrange to have a counselor come to another location on campus. In these cases, you might also want to call Campus Police at (314) 516-5155.
FOR AFTER-HOURS EMERGENCIES
UMSL Counseling is committed to providing the best, most accessible services to our students. After business hours UMSL Counseling Services' phones (314)516-5711 are answered by clinical professionals providing confidential support, crisis intervention and stabilization, and hospital referral and pre-admittance when necessary.
If you are unsure that you can keep yourself safe, call 911 or go to an emergency room at the nearest hospital.
PLEASE NOTE: UMSL Counseling Services are not available when the university is closed during the Fall and Winter breaks. If you are experiencing a crisis at that time please contact one of the resources below to ensure continuity of your care.
