Building the Future of UMSL

For the past three years, the University of Missouri–St. Louis has been engaged in transformative projects aimed at building an infrastructure that prioritizes people, programs and spaces through our Transform UMSL initiative.

From removing the SSB Tower to make way for its expansion, to laying the foundation for the new Richter Family Welcome and Alumni Center, to reimagining the Arts and Administration Building and University Libraries—these are just a few of more than 40 targeted projects shaping the future of our campus.

Transformation from the Ground Up

This spring, we will focus on replacing and upgrading decades-old electrical and data lines that power our North Quad. This work is essential to improving security, sustainability, and the overall reliability of our campus infrastructure.

To accomplish this, we will be running new lines through the North Quad, which will require temporary closures of foot traffic in the area. We are committed to minimizing disruptions by reopening pathways as work is completed and aligning scheduled power outages with non-academic periods.

Navigating the North Quad: Spring Plan

Beginning February 3, access to and through the North Quad will be limited. While current access from Express Scripts Hall to Lucas Hall and the Millennium Student Center (MSC) has been maintained, this thoroughfare will be disrupted during construction. We ask that you:

  • Follow directional signage to navigate alternative routes.
  • Allow extra time for transitions between buildings.
  • Utilize the temporary bus stop on the east side of Lucas Hall for accessibility.
  • Look for on-site ambassadors who will assist with navigation.
  • Utilize MSC Parking Garages for access to Lucas Hall and Clark Hall.
  • Utilize parking on West Drive and next to Anheuser Busch Hall for access to SSB first floor, ABH and Express Scripts Hall.

Scheduled Power Outages

To ensure the safety of crews working with high-voltage lines, two major power shutdowns are planned:

  1. Spring Break Week (March 22–30)
Affects: SSB, Express Scripts Hall, Lucas Hall, and Anheuser-Busch Hall.
  2. Post-Commencement (May 19–30)
Affects: SSB, Express Scripts Hall, Lucas Hall, Anheuser-Busch Hall, Clark Hall, the MSC, University Libraries, J.C. Penney Building, Touhill Performing Arts Center, Arts and Administration Building, West Garage, and MSC Garages.

Facilities Management will present more detailed information at upcoming meetings including:

  • Chancellor’s Leadership Team
  • Staff Association
  • University Assembly and Senate
  • Budget and Planning
  • Student Government Association

Our Commitment: On Schedule, On Time, For Purpose

While this work may cause temporary disruptions, it is part of our larger effort to redevelop UMSL’s infrastructure from the ground up to support learning, research, and outcomes for decades to come. Much of the North Campus infrastructure dates back to the 1960s. Today, we have an unprecedented opportunity to modernize and invest in our campus to better serve our students, faculty, staff, and the broader St. Louis community. This project also lays the groundwork for future growth, including the SSB Expansion, which will house the College of Education and Honors College.

We remain committed to completing this work on time and on budget. With significant investments from the State of Missouri and generous donors, we are collaborating with local contractors and vendors to ensure this project contributes to the region’s growth.
