Allergy injection Information/Procedure

Overview

Health Services offers allergy injection appointments to students administered by our medical staff. Allergy injection consultation appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling 314-516-5671 or via the Patient Portal.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

  1. Allergy serum vials
  2. Instructions or paperwork from your allergist
  3. Epinephrine or EpiPen

If you do not have an EpiPen, Health Services can write an order for you or contact your allergist.

Appointment Requirements and Procedures

  • Take a second-generation antihistamine one to two hours before your appointment.
  • Serum vials can be stored at Health Services or brought to each appointment.
  • You will be required to wait 30 minutes (or longer if ordered by your allergist) after the injection and have the injection site checked by medical staff before leaving.
  • Contact our office immediately if you experience generalized itching, hives, sneezing, or difficulty breathing. If this occurs after hours, go to the Emergency Room or call 911.
  • Systemic reactions will be treated as ordered by your allergist. Epinephrine will be administered and repeated if necessary. Paramedics will be called, and your allergist will be notified.
  • Allergy injections will not be given during acute asthma attacks, infectious illness, or if you have a fever greater than 100 °F (37.8 °C).
  • The cost for allergy injections is $10 per visit. Payment may be made by cash, check, or student account.
  • If you are unable to keep your appointment, it is your responsibility to notify Health Services by calling 314-516-5671 or by sending a message through the Patient Portal.
