PROPOSAL PREPARATION: QUICK GUIDE

External Funding

  1. After formulating an idea for a project, start to transform that idea into a short concept paper that describes the work to be done.
  2. Identify the appropriate sponsor(s). Contact the ORA if you need some assistance. Grant announcements are distributed monthly in the ORA's "Spirit of Innovation" newsletter. ORA staff can provide comprehensive searches for multiple funding sources can assist in analyzing the sponsor’s objectives to verify a match with the proposed project (contact Tamara Wilgers, 314-516-6884).
  3. Visit sponsor web site for more information. Familiarize yourself with their guidelines and procedures.
  4. Take your short concept and prepare a draft proposal and an outlined budget (Refer to Budget Checklist).
  5. Circulate the draft proposal to colleagues for comments.
  6. Discuss the proposal budget with Ginny Schodroski (314-516-5284). Ginny will also discuss with you the training you will need on PeopleSoft, so contact her as soon as you know you want to submit a proposal. NOTE: When preparing a grant proposal, you must submit your budget to Ginny at least two weeks before the proposal submission deadline.
  7. Ensure regulatory compliance by securing approval for human subjects, animal subjects, radioactive material or recombinant DNA research (if applicable).
  8. Complete the PeopleSoft Signature page.
  9. Bring your final proposal to the ORA.
