UMSL Psychology Professor Receives President's Award for Research and Creativity
Dr. Miles Patterson was recently selected as the 2009 recipient of the University of Missouri President’s Award for Research and Creativity. It is presented each year to a faculty member from one of the four campuses (Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, and St. Louis) for “a sustained national and international record of research and/or creativity.” Professor Patterson will receive the award at a June 4 dinner at the Board of Curators’ meeting in Kansas City.
Patterson has been on the Psychology faculty at UM-St. Louis since 1969 and was the 1990 recipient of the UM-St. Louis Chancellor’s Award for Research and Creativity. He is the author of 90 publications, including two books (one translated into Japanese), the recent co-edited Sage Handbook of Nonverbal Communication, 20 chapters in edited scholarly volumes in Psychology and Communication, and numerous empirical, review, and theoretical articles. For forty years, he has systematically developed a program of research on nonverbal communication that includes three major theories (and the recent development of a fourth-generation theory), numerous empirical articles, and a variety of methodological publications. A new book manuscript, just under contract, will be published in English, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, and Japanese editions.
In the outside letters supporting Patterson's nomination, a wide range of eminent scholars in Psychology and Communication from across the world recognized him as one of the leading international scholars in nonverbal communication. In particular, these scholars emphasized the importance of Patterson's theories and his innovative methodologies in advancing empirical research.
