- MIMH DIRECTOR WINS SILVER KEY AWARD

Health (MIMH)
Joseph Parks, M.D., Director of the Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH), has been selected as the 2011 winner of the Silver Key Award by Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri. Each year the award is presented "to a mental health professional in the St. Louis community whose work, values and ethics contribute to the improved treatment and care of people with mental illness." The MHA cited Dr. Parks' contributions in the areas of direct service/treatment, research, advocacy and mental health care delivery system as the basis for its decision. The award will be presented in the 28th Annual Snow Ball held on Dec. 9, 2011. Congratulations to Dr. Parks.
- POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURE SUBMISSION NOW ONLINE
All disclosures of potential conflict of interest in research should now be filed online through IRBNet.org, along with all IRB and IACUC protocols (modules that went live earlier this year). You can register and access all three online compliance areas at http://www.irbnet.org; within each area, you will find instructions, guidelines and forms regarding submitting and managing submissions and disclosures. - COMPANY ESTABLISHED BY UMSL PROFESSOR RECEIVES $3 MILLION INVESTMENT
Nawgan, a drink made for alertness and concentration, was developed by UMSL's Robert Paul, Professor in the Department of Psychology. Nawgan Products, the company Paul helped establish to commercialize the beverage, announced that Japanese brewer Kirin Holdings is buying a minority interest in the company allowing Nawgan to enter new markets. - $30 MILLION REGIONAL COMMITMENT TO ADVANCE ST. LOUIS BIOSCIENCE
A new regional organization to champion St. Louis bioscience, BioSTL (evolved from the Coalition for Plant and Life Sciences), announced Sept. 27, 2011, a $30 million commitment from Washington University in St. Louis, BJC HealthCare, and the St. Louis Life Sciences Project to forward bioscience company creation and drive economic growth in St. Louis. These funds will increase the region's capacity to support entrepreneurs and launch BioSTL itself, the next step in St. Louis' 10-year-old collective effort to increase economic activity in the medical and plant biosciences. - UMSL TO HOST WORKSHOP ON AMERICA INVENTS ACT
Join us Oct. 12, 2011 (3:30 - 5 p.m., MSC), for a workshop on the recently enacted law governing intellectual property and patents with important implications for university technology transfer. Participants include legal practitioners and scholars. For a detailed discussion on new law's implications, see "Assessment of the USPTO" (PDF). The Oct. 12 session is open to faculty, staff and students.
