  • US Secretary of Energy Visits Sam Wang's Lab
    Sam Wang

    On May 21, 2010, US Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu; Congressman Lacy Clay; Dr. Richard Sayre, Director, Enterprise Institute for Renewable Fuels; along with various local scientific leaders paid a visit to the lab of Dr. Xuemin "Sam" Wang at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. Dr. Wang is the E. Desmond Lee and Family Fund Endowed Professor in plant biochemistry and molecular biology
    at UMSL and holds a joint position as PI at the Danforth Center. His research has several applications to alternative fuels and energy, including methods to increase oil production of various plants and crops.

    The UM Research Board is designed to enhance the long-term quality and quantity of scholarship throughout the University by supporting meritorious research projects.   • Collegiate Inventors Competition Seeking Inventive Entries from Students The "Invent Now Collegiate Inventors Competition," which is co-sponsored by the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Abbott Fund, recognizes graduate and undergraduate students for their innovative work and awards cash prizes. Now in its 19th year, the 2010 program will award a total of nearly $80,000 to student inventors at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., this fall.

  • UMSL Faculty Wins Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence "The nonlinear relation between agency costs and managerial equity ownership: Evidence of decreasing benefits of increasing ownership, written by UMSL's Dr. Pamela Stuerke, Associate Professor of Accounting, and published in International Journal of Managerial Finance has been chosen as an Outstanding Paper Award Winner.

    Every year, Emerald invites each journal's editorial team to nominate what they believe has been that title's Outstanding Paper and up to three Highly Commended Papers from the previous 12 months. The award winning papers are chosen following consultation amongst the journal's editorial team, many of whom are eminent academics or managers. Dr. Stuerke's paper was selected as one of the most impressive pieces of work the team has seen throughout 2009.

    Dr. Stuerke noted in an email after learning of the award that "I am very pleased by this recognition and grateful that my co-author was able to obtain the data for the research."

  • Funding Opportunity: FY 2010 COPS Methamphetamine Initiative The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced that UM-St. Louis has been invited to apply for grant funding under the FY 2010 COPS Methamphetamine Initiative. The online application system for FY 2010 applicants will be available in early June through the COPS Office web site: www.cops.usdoj.gov. COPS Methamphetamine grants provide funding that supports enforcement, training, and prevention activities nationwide, but is concentrated in areas with the greatest need for assistance in combating methamphetamine production, distribution, and use. The COPS Office encourages agencies to focus on community policing approaches to methamphetamine reduction.

  • USPTO Teams with Google to Provide Bulk Patent and Trademark Data to the Public
    Under Secretary of Commerce and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) David Kappos announced today that the USPTO has entered into a no-cost, two-year agreement with Google to make bulk electronic patent and trademark public data available to the public in bulk form. Under this agreement, the USPTO is providing Google with existing bulk, electronic files, which Google will host without modification for the public free of charge.

    Until now, the USPTO's public data in bulk form has be provided solely as a fee-based service. The USPTO estimates that nearly 10 terabytes of information will be made available, including patent grants and published applications, trademark applications, patent classification information, patent maintenance fee events, patent and trademark assignments, and more.
