RESEARCH & COMMERCIALIZATION NEWS

University Research News

  • NSF Announces Implementation of Responsible Conduct of Research Policy. In August, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced plans to implement the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) policy. As of Jan. 4, 2010, the NSF will require institutions, at the time of proposal submission, to certify that they have programs in place to promote "responsible and ethical conduct of research to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers participating in the proposed research project." While the training plans are not required to be included in proposals submitted, the NSF will reserve the right to review them upon request. The agency does not intend to issue specific standards recognizing that "training needs may vary depending on specific circumstances of research or the needs of students."

The UM System plans to issue procedures all UM campuses regarding the RCR. Watch upcoming issues of this newsletter for more information.

  • Lilly Launches New Site to Uncover Compounds for Future Medicines. With support from the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), Eli Lilly and Company has launched the Lilly Phenotypic Drug Discovery Initiative (PD2) to work with "research universities, institutes, and biotech to uncover compounds that may become future medicines and impact patients' lives." According to Alan D. Palkowitz, vice-president, Discovery Chemistry Research & Technologies, Lilly Research Laboratories, in an executive summary about the program, it is the company's hope that "this open innovation program will provide academic and biotech investigators access to sophisticated in vitro model systems while simultaneously increasing Lilly's partnership with top global research talent."
