Dr. Robert Ricklefs

  • UMSL's Dr. Robert Ricklefs Elected to National Academy of Sciences The National Academy of Sciences recently announced the election of 72 new members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research, including Dr. Robert Ricklefs, Curators Professor of Biology at UM-St. Louis. Ricklefs, now one of 2,150 active members, is the only member from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and one of only five from the UM System. Elections were held April 28, 2009. Dr. Ricklefs was nominated jointly by the Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences and Ecology sections (nominations can be submitted only by Academy members). Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.The National Academy of Sciences is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. It was established in 1863 by a congressional act of incorporation signed by Abraham Lincoln that calls on the Academy to act as an official adviser to the federal government, upon request, in any matter of science or technology.   • MoGene, LC, Moves into IT Enterprises This emerging biotech company, which signed a lease with the University's new business incubator in February 2009, is focused on understanding the mechanisms of cellular toxicity of chemical compounds and applying the knowledge to improve safety and efficacy of products across life science industries.  MOgene, LC, uses a systems biology approach to understand gene function in the context of biological networks in order to develop assays and biomarkers for molecular diagnostic solutions that would help address toxicity issues. The company provides microarray services including custom design of arrays, experiment design and detailed bioinformatics analysis. MOgene finished building out their office and lab space and moved into IT Enterprises in April.
