GRANT TIPS

Solicited Grants

These grant proposals respond to advertisements called program solications, requests for proposals (RFP), or requests for applications (RFA), which are sent out by funding sources and posted on their websites.

Unsolicited Grants

These grants respond to the mission or objectives of the funding source, not to a specific program or advertisment.

If you are applying to the U.S. Governement, you can find information about solicited and unsolicited grants at grants.gov, Grant Advisor Plus, InfoEd, or the websites of federal agencies.

Foundation and corporate opportunities can be located through the Community of Science (www.cos.com) or similar grant search engines, including Grant Advisor and InfoEd.

GRANT TRENDS

Increasingly, the federal government has been interested in supporting collaborative research among industry, universities, and research laboratories. When private and public researchers collaborate, the chances are better that research will turn into applications or products. Right now, the most competitive grants seem to be ones that create a network of cross-disciplinary researchers in the public and private sectors.

Reed Science Group Academic Sourcebook, June 2006

GRANT RESOURCES

If your grant requires information dissemination through a conference, institute, symposium, workshop, etc., contact the UMSL Division of Continuing Education & Outreach. The Division offers complete planning, marketing and support services for programs, on and off campus. Call Dr. Gina Ganahl, Associate Dean, at (314) 516-5925, or e-mail ganahlg@umsl.edu.

UMSL GRANT SUBMISSION POLICY

PeopleSoft Signature Routing Sheet (PSRS)

Must be delivered to the Office of Research BEFORE the grant will be submitted. Applies to any grant being submitted to any agency. Must include ALL signatures (all PIs Co-PIs, Dept. Chairs, Deans of each person, dept, and/or school who has time/resources committed through direct costs or cost sharing/match).

Budgets

SUBMIT YOUR BUDGET TO GINNY SCHODROSKI TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO SUBMISSION DEADLINE. Large or complex budgets should be finalized at least one week before submission so that the PSRS can be prepared and routed for ALL required signatures. Proposal review time must be allowed before asking someone to commit their unit.

Note

If you are going to be away from the University at the time of submission, you must arrange before leaving to sign the PSRS signature page.

2007 Postdoctoral and Senior Research Awards

The program provides opportunities for Ph.D., Sc.D. or M.D. scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability to perform research on problems largely of their own choosing, yet compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratory.

Full-time associateships will be awarded on a competitive basis in 2007 for research in the fields of chemistry, earth and atmospheric sciences, engineering, applied sciences and computer science, life and medical sciences, mathematics, space and planetary sciences, and physics.

Postdoctoral awards are made for one or two years, renewable for a maximum of three years; senior applicants who have held the doctorate at least five years may receive awards for shorter periods.

Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients for the 2007 program year range from $38,000 to $65,000, depending on the sponsoring laboratory, and are appropriately higher for senior award recipients.

Annual application deadlines: FEB 1, MAY 1, AUG 1, NOV 1.
