Howard Lerner

Howard Lerner is best known as co-founder of Kaldi’s, a chain of retail cafes supported by a large coffee roasting facility located in Midtown St. Louis. Kaldi’s is at the center of Third Wave Coffee, a movement devoted to elevating the efforts of world coffee workers, from seed to cup. His presentation, "How to Beat a Bully," describes how Lerner transformed an unfortunate third-grade playground experience into a strategy to compete with the world’s largest coffee chain.

Prior to Kaldi's, Lerner worked as a Washington Correspondent for The Jerusalem Post, Israel's International Newspaper of Record, and as a staff writer for The St. Louis Business Journal. He graduated from Washington University in 1987 with a degree in English and has a master's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

In 2009, after selling his stake in Kaldi’s, Lerner launched another startup: Inbru Coffee Flavors, based on a technology he developed. Using organic rice hulls as a chemical-free carrier for flavors, Inbru redefines how coffee is flavored. The product was launched in June of 2010 and, within three months, was available in all 262 Williams-Sonoma stores in the United States and Canada.

Seeds of Change: Hacking St. Louis

Speaker: Jim McKelvey, co-founder, Square Inc.

Thursday, April 25, 2013   l   11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Millennium Student Center, SGA Chamber (3rd floor)
Lunch will be provided.

RSVP: Please RSVP by April 19, 2013, to ora@umsl.edu. Use "McKelvey" in the subject line.

Jim McKelvey

James McKelvey is an inventor, entrepreneur, artist, author and licensed pilot. While perhaps best known for creating the Square Reader, the technology behind one of Silicon Valley’s hottest startups, McKelvey is, in some circles, better known as a master glass artist and author, having written the world’s most widely read text on the subject, The Art Of Fire.

A 1987 Washington University Economics and Computer Science graduate, McKelvey will discuss hacking solutions to what he describes as St. Louis's most pressing challenges: retaining talent, attracting industry, and curbing crime. Referencing personal experiences and local challenges, McKelvey offers a fresh, Silicon Valley-approach to problem solving.

McKelvey is founder of Third Degree Glass Factory, one of the nation’s main centers of glass blowing arts. His own trademark hand-blown glass faucets can be seen in homes from Abu Dhabi to Mill Valley. McKelvey also founded Mira Digital Publishing, an early digital technology startup, where he gave a young programmer an internship and a place to hone his tech skills. That programmer, Jack Dorsey, went on to create Twitter and partner again with McKelvey in the development of the Square Payments Platform.

McKelvey, and his wife, Anna (a programmer and attorney), have a two-year-old son. They live in Miami, St. Louis, and San Francisco.
