LANGUAGE IMMERSION SCHOOL IN
PLANNING FOR ST. LOUIS!
German or French from Kindergarten on!
After a meeting of a group of people
with concerns for international education – including the Saint Louis
mayor’s executive assistant, the president of Saint Louis – Lyon Sister
Cities and the representative of the Central Office for German Schools
Abroad – it has been agreed to explore the founding of an International
Languages Immersion School in Saint Louis City, starting with classes
of Kindergarten education in both French and German.
Language immersion (often called “total language immersion) means that
all subjects are taught in the target language (except English, of
course).
The idea of international language immersion, specifically German
language immersion, has been successfully followed throughout the
United States in a number of projects, including the German School of
Portland, Oregon, the Twin Cities German Immersion School and the
Milwaukee German Immersion School.
The committee is looking for St. Louis’ citizens who would like to
become the educational founders of such a school (not necessarily
parents, but parents are welcome) and who would like to help build the
school.
This group will not only have the support of the City of Saint
Louis but will also incorporate expertise of French and
German educators.
The project has already been acclaimed by both the Consuls General of
France and Germany, Jean-Baptiste Main de Boissiere and Wolfgang Drautz.
Please consider joining a
School Project Group!
Take a few minutes to complete the attached
questionnaire and email it to Gert Wilhelm, Language Consultant
from the Goethe-Institut.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Saint Louis’
educational community!
