About the German Culture Center
The German Culture Center is located on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis and is a unit of UMSL Global. The GCC is also a "cultural institute" of GOETHE INSTITUT whose mission is to present contemporary German culture and to foster the German language and culture within the American educational system. Since its founding in 1999, the GCC has become a key institution for area German teachers, for the German American community, and for those who wish to know more about German life, language, and culture.

Veronica Ross-Mickan, Coordinator of the GCC, began her interest in German language and culture as a year exchange student to Bad Zwischenahn, Germany where she attended the Gymnasium Bad Zwischenahn-Edewecht. After two years of study in German and art at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, she returned to Germany as an Au-Pair and continued her “German for Foreigners” study at the Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. After completion of the German for Foreigners exams and university entrance certification, she went on to complete the IHK (German Chamber of Commerce) training and certification as an International Travel Agent/Business (Reiseverkehrskauffrau), in Munich, Germany.
In her over twenty-five years stay in Germany she also obtained an International Air Transport Association/ Universal Federation of Travel Agents’ Association (IATA/UFFTA) Certification in Geneva, Switzerland, an EUROLTA ESL Certification in Parsberg, Germany and an Office Assistant Certification in Grafenau, Germany.
Veronica was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense on the McGraw Kaserne in Munich, Germany, as well as TWA and American Airlines at the Munich, Riem Airport. She also enjoyed a career in the international travel field working for the German tour operators Frosch Touristik, Dumont-Klingenstein Studienreisn and Studiosus Studienriesn before becoming owner and operator of FineLine Office in the Bavarian Forest. Later she returned to the University of Missouri-St. Louis to complete her BA in German and BFA in Art Education and teacher examination in both subjects. She graduated with honors and currently holds Missouri teaching certification in both German and Art Education.

Das deutsche Kulturzentrum befindet sich auf dem Campus der University of Missouri-St. Louis und ist eine Einheit von UMSL Global. Das GCC ist auch ein „Kulturinstitut“ des GOETHE-INSTITUTES, mit der Aufgabe, zeitgenössische deutsche Kultur zu präsentieren und die deutsche Sprache und Kultur im amerikanischen Bildungssystem zu fördern. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 1999 hat sich das GCC zu einer wichtigen Institution für Deutschlehrer in der Region, für die deutsch-amerikanische Gemeinschaft und für diejenigen entwickelt, die mehr über das deutsche Leben, die deutsche Sprache und die deutsche Kultur erfahren möchten.
Die Koordinatorin des GCC Veronica Ross-Mickan entdeckte ihr Interesse an deutscher Sprache und Kultur als einjährige Austauschschülerin in Bad Zwischenahn in Deutschland. In der Zeit besuchte sie das Gymnasium Bad Zwischenahn-Edewecht. Nach zwei Jahren Studium der Germanistik und Kunst an der University of Missouri-St. Louis kehrte sie als Au-Pair nach Deutschland zurück und setzte dort ihr „Deutsch für Ausländer-Studium” an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn und der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München mit erfolgreichem Abschluss fort. Anschließend schloss sie die IHK (Deutsche Industrie und Handelskammer)-Ausbildung/Umschulung und die Zertifizierung zur Reiseverkehrskauffrau in München ab. Während ihres über 25-jährigen Aufenthaltes in Deutschland erlangte sie außerdem eine Zertifizierung der International Air Transport Association/Universal Federation of Travel Agents' Association (IATA/UFFTA) in Genf, Schweiz, eine EUROLTA ESL-Zertifizierung in Parsberg, Deutschland, und eine Zertifizierung als Büroassistentin in Grafenau im Bayerischen Wald in Deutschland.
Veronica war auch beim US-Verteidigungsministerium in der McGraw-Kaserne bei München in Deutschland und bei TWA und American Airlines am Flughafen München-Riem beschäftigt. Darüber hinaus war sie im internationalen Reisebereich bei den deutschen Reiseveranstaltern Frosch Touristik, Dumont-Klingenstein Studienreisen und Studiosus Studienreisen tätig. In ihrer eigenen Firma FineLine Office im Bayerischen Wald bot sie Übersetzungen Deutsch-Englisch an. Später kehrte sie an die University of Missouri-St. Louis zurück und schloss ihren BA in Germanistik und ihren BFA in Kunstpädagogik sowie die Lehrerprüfung in beiden Fächern ab. Ihr Studium bestand Sie mit Auszeichnung und sie verfügt derzeit über eine Lehrbefähigung für den Unterricht Deutsch als Fremdsprache und Kunstpädagogik in Missouri.
Programs
The Center continues to work closely with the Goethe Institut in Chicago. Thousands have attended GCC workshops and programs, which often feature German artists and scholars.
The GCC is an active member of the German American Committee of Saint Louis. This umbrella organization of over twenty cultural societies helps coordinate area events and plans the annual German-American Day celebration held in October.
The Center is open to the general public by appointment. Call (314) 516-6620 or email gcc@umsl.edu to set a time and receive a parking permit. Each year many visitors come to the GCC to check out videos from the ever-expanding collection. These videos may be borrowed, free of charge, for two weeks.
German teachers make extensive use of the Center, which has become a sort of ombudsman for German educational affairs, helping promote school events, publicizing course offerings of the University and other institutions, and announcing job openings or special requests from local school districts.
Each year, the GCC offers well-attended workshops for German teachers and works closely with the Missouri Association of Teachers of German in providing programs to improve and promote the teaching of German in area schools.
The Center also presents the Goessl Book Award to outstanding students of German.
