Steven Schreiner

Steven Schreiner is the author of the collections Belly and Too Soon to Leave, and the chapbook Imposing Presence, and co-author with Allison Cundiff of In Short, a Memory of the Other on a Good Day. His poems have appeared in many magazines, including Poetry, Image, Colorado Review, Missouri Review, River Styx and December, and numerous anthologies. He is the recipient of fellowships from the VCCA, Tall Rock Retreat, and The National Writer’s Voice of the YMCA. A graduate of the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop, he received the Ph. D in English from Wayne State University. He taught in the MFA Program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis from its inception in 1998 until retiring in 2019 and is the founding editor of Natural Bridge, a journal of contemporary literature. In the St. Louis community he has offered numerous classes in creative writing for OASIS and has been a frequent guest critic for St. Louis Poetry Center workshops and an invited speaker for The Wednesday Club. His scholarly contributions include an often-cited article in College Composition and Communication and the entry on Philip Levine in Contemporary Jewish-American Dramatists and Poets. He is Associate Professor Emeritus of English.
