Tola Abraham on Teaching MFA Workshops

"My first concern as a creative writing professor is curating an environment amenable to sustained creativity.

The workshop is therefore not just a space for manuscript analysis; where we find and submit to the chopping block what is not working. It also is a space for making plain the vision, identifying the main goal of each manuscript. I try to identify the central working idea of each manuscript as well as the most significant barriers to the successful execution of that idea. I want my students to come away from each workshop not only with stronger manuscripts but also equipped with more insight into their own personal creative ambitions as well as with all the tools needed to achieve them”.
