Dr. Daphne Liu obtained her Ph.D. in Psychological & Brain Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis in 2022 and completed her clinical internship at Emory University. She completed her postdoctoral fellowships at Stony Brook University and the University of Denver prior to joining UMSL. Broadly speaking, Dr. Liu’s conducts research on affective and social processes related to psychological well-being and psychopathology, with a particular focus on depression and people of diverse identities and lived experiences. Specifically, Dr. Liu’s research aims to understand (1) intrapersonal and interpersonal emotion regulation in major depressive disorder, (2) the association between romantic relationships and mental health, (3) affect regulation in the context of sexual and gender minority stress. Dr. Liu also plans to launch a program of research aimed to identify person-specific risk factors and treatment targets for depression to inform personalized interventions. Dr. Liu’s research relies heavily on ambulatory assessment (e.g., ecological momentary assessment) to understand people’s experiences in their naturalistic settings. Clinically, Dr. Liu received generalist training, and she has a particular interest in providing relationship therapy, including couples and family therapy, to clients of diverse identities and backgrounds.
Dr. Liu will be accepting new graduate students in the Clinical Psychology Program for Fall 2026.
