iMentor Guidelines

What is a peer mentor?

A peer mentor helps the first time college students go through the college transition. Mentors are different from a success coach who is more formal and focuses on skills building.

Mentors can:

  • Be a sounding board and give information regarding UMSL life
  • Refer to resources
  • Help with study tips and advice
  • Help with canvas and other basic student tech

Peer Mentors are mandatory reporters on our college campus and excellent sources of experience and information.

Mentoring begins in September and ends on May 2026. You are required to have your first meeting by September 30th .

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a mentor meeting?

Mentors will be checking in on different aspects of student life throughout the semester or have activities. Let your mentor know if you have specific items you'd like support with. Most students talk about classes, study tips, UMSL traditions, and how to get involved on campus. One on One mentors also have the option of attending events with mentees.

I can't stay for the whole event. Can I attend for a portion of it?

Yes! We would like it if you can stay but understand if you can't make it every time. Let me or your mentor know if you can't make it. Snacks are also provided during these events.

Can I meet my mentor during school breaks?

Mentees and Mentors do not meet during vacations or week of finals. Mentoring takes a pause after fall semester and resumes the 1st week of Spring.

I am not able to attend an event, what are my options?

Please email the coordinator regarding your absence at the event and instead attend one of the CTS workshops offered during the semester.
