Engineering the Future of Medicine

University of Missouri–St. Louis Engineering Laboratories
OrthoSummit is an immersive two-day orthopedic engineering experience designed for rising 10th–12th grade students who are curious about engineering, medicine, and medical device innovation. Hosted by the Orthopedic Biomaterials and Mechanics (OBM) Laboratory in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, the program introduces students to biomechanics, orthopedic surgery, fracture fixation, and engineering design through professional-grade surgical simulation and hands-on learning.
Hands-On Orthopedic Engineering Rotations
Participants work in small teams and rotate through four interactive engineering stations, each focused on a different approach to stabilizing tibial fractures:
- External Fixation: Build and evaluate fixation frames while exploring alignment, stability, and damage-control orthopedics.
- Complex Fracture Stabilization: Investigate how construct design influences the treatment of unstable comminuted fractures.
- Intramedullary Nailing: Perform simulated nail insertion while learning principles of minimally invasive fixation, load sharing, and rotational stability.
- Plate Fixation: Compare bridge plating and compression plating while exploring implant design, construct stiffness, and soft tissue preservation.
Students also participate in an Orthopedic Trauma Engineering Challenge, where they apply biomechanics and critical thinking to analyze fracture scenarios, select an appropriate fixation strategy, and defend their engineering decisions as a team.
