Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Post-Graduate Certificate students recently participated in on-campus immersive learning experiences designed to strengthen clinical skills through hands-on practice and simulation!
The experiences are intended to bridge classroom learning with real-world patient care, helping students build confidence, competence, and clinical judgment.
During the April Advanced Health Assessment Immersive Learning Experience, students participated in HPI (History of Present Illness) trivia, pharmacology review, assessment skill stations and psychiatric interview discussions. They then applied their knowledge in simulated standardized patient encounters, allowing them to demonstrate head-to-toe physical assessments. For many students, this was their first time interacting with a standardized patient.
A highlight of the event was collaboration with the UMSL College of Optometry, which helped enhance students' eye examination skills, an important component of advanced practice nursing!
In May, DNP and APRN Post-Graduate Certificate students participated in additional hands-on training and simulation activities for the start of their Practicum sequence focused on IUD (intrauterine device) insertion, lumbar puncture procedures, advanced airway management, and the assessment and management of psychiatric emergencies.
While much of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program is delivered through flexible online coursework, students participate in five on-campus immersive learning experiences during clinical courses.
Program Director of the DNP & APRN-PGC Programs Dr. Brit Phillips said:
“One of the most rewarding aspects of our program is the on-campus immersive learning experiences. Our curriculum is intentionally designed to provide hands-on opportunities for students to develop and refine the advanced clinical skills essential for advanced practice registered nurses. It is both an honor and a privilege to watch students grow in confidence and competence. Seeing that moment when theory comes to life and students make meaningful connections to clinical practice is truly inspiring—and one of the most fulfilling parts of being an educator.”
The UMSL DNP program offers multiple pathways, including BSN to DNP and MSN to DNP options. Specialty tracks include Adult/Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner–Primary Care, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner–Acute Care, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner- Dual Track, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.
Students work closely with faculty mentors and clinical partners to develop leadership skills, evidence-based practice, and advanced clinical expertise!
Applications for the DNP program remain open for Fall 2026 admission through NursingCAS until July 2nd!
Applications for the PGC program will open in Fall 2026 for Summer 2027 admission and will also be submitted through NursingCAS.
