Most clients who call or stop by Counseling Services in a state of crisis can meet with a counselor the same day. Our front desk staff will schedule the earliest possible appointment for a client when notified that the situation is an emergency.

When clients arrive for appointments at Counseling Services, they are first asked to fill out some paperwork. This process takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and provides the crisis counselor with background information about clients and their concerns.

Initial appointments usually last about 50 minutes. When meeting with a person in crisis, the counselor will ask the client about the events and experiences that have precipitated the crisis. For many, simply having the chance to talk about their situations helps to relieve some of their distress. Counselors also help clients develop strategies for dealing with the crisis-causing events. As part of this process, the counselor will ask the client about any suicidal thoughts, and will work with the client to develop a plan for remaining safe.

If you have any other questions about the counseling process, feel free to contact Counseling Services.
