What is Dual Enrollment?
The UMSL Dual Enrollment Program (DEP) provides advanced-level high school students with the opportunity to take college classes on UMSL's campus or online with UMSL professors. Students use this option to expand on academic subjects that may not be available at the high school level (e.g. anthropology or philosophy, and/or to pursue individual interests). DEP students will learn alongside fully-matriculated college students and pay the full-time undergraduate tuition rate.
The Dual Enrollment Program (DEP) is distinct from the Advanced Credit Program (ACP). The ACP is a dual credit program in which students take college-level classes at their high school. DEP courses are taken on UMSL's campus with UMSL faculty. For more information about dual credit, see the Advanced Credit Program.
The DEP is intended for high school students who either:
- Have exceptional academic skills that surpass the course topics available at their high school (such as advanced math or science)
- Have unique academic interests
- Are required to successfully complete a college course as a high school requirement
- Need to fulfill high school academic requirements to be able to accommodate more high school electives (such as jazz band or orchestra).
Students may select courses offered during the day, evening, or online as long as all prerequisites are met. Class size is dependent on the course and can range from 15 to 200. DEP students may not enroll for any individualized instruction such as independent study or directed reading courses, supervised research, etc.
Successful DEP students will typically have a 3.0 or higher GPA in their core courses. Students who would like to take courses through the Honors College at UMSL must have a 3.2 GPA and/or participate in the Honors program at their high school.
How Do I Enroll?
Students who wish to enroll through the DEP must complete an application, provide copies of their current high school transcripts, and have permission from their parent/guardian and high school administrator/counselor. For more information, see Registration.
If the student intends to use the earned credits as part of their high school graduation requirements, that must be arranged by the student with their high school independent from UMSL.
Students are responsible for all tuition, fees, and required materials associated with their DEP course(s). Students in the Dual Enrollment Program pay the same tuition and fees as full-time undergraduate students. See Tuition and Fees for more information.
