The UMSL English Department provides a limited number of teaching assistantships for MFA students. These assistantships are available for up to two years. In addition to receiving a stipend (approximately $10,000 per academic year), teaching assistants receive 100% remission of their tuition costs (though they do pay incidental student fees).

  • TAs teach two courses per semester of English 1100: First-Year Writing. However, during the first semester in the program, TAs may teach only one or no courses and will participate in additional mentoring and professional development activities.
  • In their first semester TAs must enroll and successfully complete English 5890: Teaching College Writing.
  • TAs must enroll in at least six credit hours of graduate level classes each semester.
  • TAs must attend the English Department Pre-Semester Professional Development Workshop. (This workshop usually begins a week to ten days before the start of the fall semester.)
  • For each semester they continue to teach, TAs must attend on-going professional development meetings.

Tutoring Assistantship

 

The UMSL English Department provides a limited number of tutoring assistantships for MFA students. These assistantships are available for up to two years. In addition to receiving a stipend (approximately $5,000), tutoring assistants receive 100% remission of their tuition costs (though they do pay incidental student fees).

  • Tutoring Assistants work 20 hours per week. Most of these hours are spent assisting undergraduate students in the UMSL Writing Lab.
  • In their first semester Tutoring Assistants must enroll and successfully complete English 5890: Teaching College Writing.
  • Tutoring Assistants must enroll in at least six credit hours of graduate level classes each semester.
  • Tutoring Assistants must attend the English Department Pre-Semester Professional Development Workshop. (This workshop usually begins a week to ten days before the start of the fall semester.)
  • For each semester they continue to work, Tutoring Assistants must attend on-going professional development meetings.
