THE CURRENT BIASED IN ELECTION COVERAGE by Robert I. Rath I happen to have seen the editorial in the April 20 edition concerning the campaigns of the candidates for last week's election, and was shocked by the overwhelming and heavy-handed bias unusual even for The Current. To denounce the Progressive Slate for dirty politics, while praising their opponents, who, by the way, started whatever nastiness was involved in this election, with their claim that if the Progressive Slate were elected, the student body would be screwed, shows the student body how slanted and distorted the viewpoint the person who wrote this article, and The Current who ran it, is toward the candidates for that election. Also, his dig on the continued debate over what is going to be done with the old student center after the new one is built, just show how arrogant and condescending the editorial staff is concerning differences in opinion. Let me ask the almighty know-it-alls at The Current about where the funds for this building came from. If they came out of the usual revenue that is received from the student body, then yes the building is the administration's to do with as it pleases. But if it were collected on a special fund, voted on by student representatives, then the student body does have a say in what happens to it; and as I understand it, this is the case. Therefore, Mr. Avery and his group have every right to do whatever is necessary to protect students' rights over this building. Instead of throwing around this tired old issue, and attacking student leaders, how about making an effort to represent the student body, and ask the administration why it refuses to allow the new increase in student activities fees to be extended over a two or three year period, thereby giving the less-advantaged student a chance to keep up with these payments. |
