Meet Board Member Samuel Fredeking

Samuel FredekingSamuel Fredeking came to the University of Missouri - St. Louis after high school looking to get serious about his education and transform his life. He earned a BA in Psychology in 2013 and his MBA in 2017.  Along the way, he also met his future wife at UMSL.

What is your UMSL story?

I was nearing my graduation from high school as a poor academic, only realizing too late the power an education actually has. UMSL was my number one school and I desperately applied hoping they would accept me. I studied hard and got accepted into the university on probation. In the summer between high school and my undergraduate, I studied harder than I had ever studied before, teaching myself every possible fundamental that I would need to be successful in my college career. I started at UMSL in 2010 knowing that I wanted a career that would mix psychology and business. I took every class I could in the psychology and business programs to diversify my knowledge and prepare myself for my future role as a HR leader. I graduated in 2013 and immediately applied for graduate school to get my masters. After receiving multiple offers from other schools, I knew that I had to continue my education at UMSL, a university that took a chance on me and made me who I am today.  I met my spouse at this university in my sophomore year as an undergraduate. We both love this university so much, we got married here. I have made so many friends here, so many networks and connections. My career success comes completely from UMSL. I shamelessly love this university.

Why did you decide to get involved in the alumni association?

I am a fan of paying it forward. UMSL gave me the career and educational success that set me apart from others in the job market. I volunteered and was very active in my student years and I wanted to continue that service work so that others can have the same phenomenal experience I had.

What do you hope to accomplish while on the board?

In my tenure on the board, I want to be known for advancing our association, this university, and ensuring that what we commit to, that we accomplish it and grow our original footprint.

What can the alumni association do for an alum?

The biggest advantage of the alumni association is the network. There are so many UMSL graduates in the Saint Louis area that can help job seekers find a new role and develop a network for future growth in a new position. Outside of professional development, there is also personal development opportunities that can be gained with individuals equally passionate about UMSL.

What is your favorite aspect about being involved with the alumni association?

Being able to actually see the potential and realized growth of the university from when I was a student twice over and while I am serving on the board.

What excites you about UMSL’s future?

Seeing all of the new educational buildings as well as watching this top-tier research university grow and get the recognition it truly deserves.
