Select Agents (High Hazards in Small Quantities)

The Hazardous Materials (HazMat) section of the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department
will coordinate the safe handling, transport, use, storage, and disposal of items on the US Center for Disease Controls (CDC) Select Agents List if ever brought onto the UMSL campuse's. See the CDC Website for more information, or the actual Regulations.

Anyone on campus desiring to use, possess, or transport chemical or biological substances which are potentially highly hazardous, even in small quantities, MUST check the Select Agents List and LD50 threshold requirements. If your material is listed or meets the performance criteria, contact the UMSL EHS office BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO BRING IT ON THE CAMPUS. This is Federal Law and campus policy.

There are many special requirements and a permit to obtain, so allow lead time for any planned projects.

Campus users are expected to follow established procedures and policies issued by the EHS office, with respect to all types of hazardous material. Federal law imposes individual liability on ANYONE creating or handling hazardous material, even after it has left their possession.
