NACE Beginnings and New Faces

January 21, 2024 | By Gabriel Galindo

New Semester, New Beginnings

Every week Tritons Esports continues to make more steps onto the scene and they did not stop just because it was winter break. We are happy to introduce that we will now start our NACE events! You too can join, all you have to do is find your game, and attend the day!

What is NACE?

NACE stands for National Association of Collegiate Esports, this organization gives out scholarships to competing college students for the game of their choice. Whether you’re a first-person-shooter kind of person, a team player, or you’d rather go solo in open maps or fight games it has a place for you. By making it onto one of the Triton teams you’ll be able to have a NACE membership you don’t have to pay for along with scholarships and events all without leaving UMSL.

Opinions by Our Teams

Our teams are hoping that this will just be the beginning when they can become bigger names, they can go to more places, and even get more prizes. In the meantime, as good as NACE is there are still some things that should be known about it. Some games like your typical fighting ones may seem a little more delayed than usual but you’ll be pressed to find as many events as NACE offers so be prepared to work around it with possible different controls and whatnot if you choose to join the teams.

Lookout for Events

The events will be held all of this coming week, so check the fliers and the papers around campus to find out when your favorite game might be holding tryouts! location will be UMSL’s MSC, 1st floor Triton Arena. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy then look out for more events on Instagram, Twitter, and Discord there will be coming events for other games too. If events aren’t your style and you just want to hang out with others who enjoy games then this is still the place for you! Play one of the available games or bring your own, rent out a console for the day, and play with whoever. Join the Discord too to meet people like you.

1st SSBU Overnight Competition

The weather may be getting colder but the competition is heating up. Tritons SSBU team of:

Joseph Lee
Adrian Gray
Basil Krekeler
Lucas De La Pena

Traveled as far as Davenport, Iowa for this competition. Being covered by over 4 different social media sites, and even local news, the importance of the competition was well-known to the team.

Honeypot 6

For anyone starting their esports career, this was the place to be. Nearly 350 people from 20 different states showed up for the chance to take on some of the greats and hopefully take home the cash prize starting at $1,000. People such as “Candle”, “ATATA”, and “Rocke” along with many others were all there, and many were listed in the top 200 as global SSBU players last year. Our Triton team had big hopes to make it on the big screen and get their name out there.

Teams Opinions

In interviews with Basil and Lucas, there was nothing but good to be said about it. Both did say they wish that they had gotten better placings but that “it is super valuable experience” and that there was a lot to learn from just being there. Lucas talked about how it is important to represent UMSL on a bigger stage, but along with that comes nerves, and he hopes that the more experience the team has the better they will do. Basil said that they hope we will begin to host more events at UMSL and have some more support, that experiences like these help you see what you need to improve on and meet new people you usually wouldn’t.

Triton League of Legends Takes to the Scene

By Gabriel Galindo | Posted November 5, 2023

Kick-off to the season

The UMSL esports teams have wasted no time in getting an early start to the season, the front runner of this group being the League of Legends team, who started their season off with an across the nation big event.

What is League of Legends?

League of Legends is a multiplayer Sci-fi game boasting 165 characters with a unique map and team capture style. The game started in 2009 with its first official championship tourney in 2011, and since then it has only grown in popularity with people all around the globe competing for prizes.

Meet the Triton League of Legends Team

The Triton League of Legends team consists of 10 main members, 5 and 5. The Varsity players are:

Conor Ryan
Nhat Pham
Meta Karagoz
Gabriel McGuiggan
Joseph Hornberger

JV Team:
Chris Haberstroh
Myles Hinton
David Thomas
Angela Truesdale
Matthew Hagedorn

Both these teams would strategize plans for weeks on how to make their best first step onto the scene. Through trial and error, the teams decided on a “1-on-1” style, to divide and conquer their opponents, and maintain control over the map's resources. With their success in practice, Triton League of Legend would play in the 500 team tournament CLoL Fall Warmup.

CLoL Fall Warmup

The CLoL Fall Warmup tourney is one of the best ways for any team to get their foot in the door. This year the tourney had teams from across the nation competing throughout October. Our team's runs would end after about 2 weeks, taking away some important info for when the more serious tourneys start.
In interviews with team members, the most common belief was that it was just a problem of trying out plays that had not been practiced too much and still getting used to the roles that they all will play on the team. Varsity Captain Conor Ryan said that he was happy with how involved the team had been, that it was a good run for their first time as a team and as an organization. Conor would add that in coming events they will focus more on how they design their game plans to limit flaws, along with this some Varsity members said that they want to look into picking more characters that will have better dynamics in order to limit weaknesses.

The last message of Triton League of Legends is they would like to invite you to join the fun! Their team is located in the MSC Pilot Deck on the first floor. Opening usually at 12:30p on weekdays there is lots of fun to be had, you don’t need anything but yourself to join in the fun. While you’re at it join the UMSL Esports Discord Channel for more information and to stay up to date on any events, tourneys, or get to know the teams and soon to come teams.
