Program Description
Power BI Desktop is a software product from the Microsoft Corporation that creates visualizations from raw data. These visualizations help businesses get meaning and focus from their data. Data can come from a wide variety of sources. Common data sources such as Excel, csv files, or any of several relational database products can be imported into the Power BI environment. Most of the growing number of internet sources can also be used to funnel data into Power BI.
The ability to create relationships between sets of imported data is also a powerful component to Power BI. Once data has been imported and related, it can be sharply focused with queries and measures. These options filter out data “noise” and add calculations that are not already included in the original source data.
All data can be shaped and molded into Power BI dashboards, giving anyone accessing the dashboard the ability to quickly derive meaning from the data. In the Power BI world, the terms “workbook” and “report” are interchangeable. They are a means of quickly sizing up important information based on sets of data that drive the decision-making process for the organization. The process of making those decisions, based on what the data reveals, and using the data in relevant visualizations such as charts, graphs, maps, tables etc. is often referred to as “business intelligence.”
The “power” in Power BI comes from the software’s ability to perform many business-oriented tasks with just a few clicks of the mouse. Power BI is the result of a union of fellow “power” products from Microsoft: Power Pivot, Power Query and Power View.
