When Samantha Star Brainerd appeared in a Missouri-based Super Bowl commercial this year, many in the UMSL community were excited to see a familiar face on screen. But the 2018 graduate’s story stretches much further back. A human resources associate specialist at Mastercard, Brainerd also founded Message Meals, an initiative supporting children facing food insecurity, and remains active in service through Mercy Hospital’s Child Life and Pediatric ER and the St. Louis Area Foodbank. A former campus leader and homecoming queen later crowned Mrs. Missouri Petite USA, she says UMSL shaped the confidence and connection that guide her today. “We can work hard in our careers but also chase our dreams and help others,” she says. “We can do everything.”
YOU RECENTLY APPEARED IN A SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL PROMOTING SOBER DRIVING. WHY WAS THAT EXPERIENCE MEANINGFUL TO YOU?
This Super Bowl commercial marked my third commercial and my first speaking role; it’s become the project people recognize me from most. I found the opportunity through acting groups and the connections I’ve built; in this industry, it’s all about how you show up. It was especially meaningful because I lost people to drunk driving at a young age and have seen how alcohol can change lives when not consumed responsibly. Because of that, I don’t drink and frequently serve as the designated driver for my friends. Getting to film a Super Bowl commercial while spreading a vital message about driving safely was an incredible experience. I always say, “Have fun and stay safe.”
YOU FOUNDED MESSAGE MEALS TO ADDRESS CHILDHOOD HUNGER. WHAT INSPIRED THAT MISSION?
Growing up, I experienced the physical, mental and social toll of food insecurity firsthand. Even in college, I relied on campus events for free meals just to get by. Those experiences shaped my mission: now that I can give back, I am dedicated to ensuring no child faces that same struggle. Through Message Meals, I provide children with a discreet letter sharing my journey from “nothing” to where I am now, proving they are capable of greatness regardless of their starting point. Each letter includes a gift card for a meal because we cannot always guarantee access to a working kitchen. By donating today, I am working to change the future of our country – one meal at a time.
HOW DID YOUR TIME AT UMSL SHAPE YOUR PATH?
Getting involved on campus shaped who I am today. As an introvert, I knew growth required pushing past my comfort zone. Over my years at UMSL, I evolved into a leader managing events, budgets and teams. Students would see I was involved and ask for help getting connected, and that passion for connecting people with opportunities led me naturally into staffing, recruitment and eventually human resources. I firmly believe that while grades matter, your personal growth and the connections you make are equally important. I would not be the leader I am today without my experience at UMSL.
YOU REMAIN DEEPLY INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED?
I am a product of community support. I know firsthand what it’s like to go without and the weight of those struggles physically, mentally and socially. My journey from childhood poverty to where I stand today was paved by the kindness of others. I am dedicated to being the helping hand I once needed because I believe a single act of kindness can be the bridge between someone’s struggle and their success.
