Please call 314.516.6396 to make an appointment.
The Campus Testing Center only needs a day or two notice, so do not call for an appointment until you are ready to take the examination.
More information about the CLEP credit that UMSL will accept may be found at our Credit by Examination website.
- Exam descriptions and information are available on the following web sites:
The following will tell you all you need to know about how to proceed.
Fees
The total charge to take a CLEP test is $100.00. The CLEP test charge is $80.00 and the Campus Testing Center fee is $20.00. You may pay for your CLEP fees with a credit card (but not a debit card) (Master Card, VISA, American Express), as you register on-line to take the test, or you may pay by check or money order, payable to CLEP. The Campus Testing Center fees should be paid by check, payable to University of Missouri-St. Louis. Bring your payment to the Campus Testing Center when you come to take the examination(s). You may not take more that two CLEP examinations in the same day.
Location
The Campus Testing Center is located in room 412 of the SSB (Social Sciences and Business) Building. Take the elevator in the Tower building to the 4th floor, exit the elevator and walk down the short hall that will be to your left. At the intersecting hallway turn left and walk the length of the hall to the last door on the left. There is a sign for the Campus Testing (Assessment) Center next to the door.
Parking
All visitors to the UMSL campus should go to the Parking and Transportation Office and obtain a $1.00 one-day guest parking pass. Please see the Parking and Transportation Office web site for further details. These visitors should park near the Millennium Student Center.
Otherwise, it is best to park on Level 3 of the West Drive garage. Stairs and elevator service are available for those who park on different levels. Do not park in a Faculty / Staff place. Spaces for Handicapped parking in the garage are available if needed. The Tower building will be to your left as you leave the garage. It is a 13-story building that should be easy to notice.
Registration
Testing is by appointment only. Registration is simple. There is a short form to complete and it is available in the Campus Testing Center. The actual CLEP exam will probably run up to 90 minutes. Plan on being on campus for approximately two hours, allowing time for arrival at the Campus Testing Center, registration and getting on line for the computer-based test, and completion of a computer-based tutorial /orientation. You will be able to find out your score when you finish the exam.
Please be sure you bring PHOTO ID. In order to take the CLEP, you must present two forms of personal identification. The primary form of identification must be a government-issued photo ID card that bears your signature. The secondary form of ID must have a photo and/or signature. Military candidates must present a current military ID and a second form of government-issued photo ID. You will sign in upon arrival so that your signature can be compared with the signatures on your ID.

The room we use for CLEP testing is the same room we use for University students who may require a private location for testing. Priority is given to University of Missouri-St. Louis students over CLEP test takers. That is why we ask that you only schedule a CLEP appointment a day or two ahead of when you actually take the exam. When you make your appointment please tell us your phone number in case we need to reschedule your exam. This is a rare occurrence but possible.
CLEP Equivalencies
This information exists on the web but we ask that you use caution and double-check whatever you might glean from the CLEP equivalency link below with an advisor. We do not want you to take a CLEP test that will not really help you with your current degree program and plans.
Many people find that CLEP testing can be an effective way of gaining credit for life experience or study that is quicker and less expensive than taking a particular course. Please consider it, but also check your decisions with an academic advisor.
