Jean Nelson
Jean Nelson began her nursing career in 1958 when she graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, and she has had extensive experience in hospital staff nursing and nursing education. She earned her BS degree from the University of Dubuque (Iowa), MS from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and MEd and PhD degrees from UMSL.
Jean teaches various courses in Barnes College of Nursing and Health Studies, primarily psychiatric/mental health nursing, and does extensive clinical supervision of nursing students. She leads an Honors College symposium in Nutrition and Health, a controversial topic that provides students from diverse backgrounds with opportunities for engagement in serious inquiry and critical thinking.
In addition to volunteer work with community organizations, Jean enjoys reading, walking, swimming, doing crossword puzzles, and traveling to spend time with her adult children. Her on-campus base of operations is Office 232 in the Nursing Administration Building, the small building down the hill from the Honors College. She is off campus for clinical activities several days a week, but can be contacted by phone at extension 7237 or by Email at Jean_Nelson@umsl.edu
