Message from the Admissions Counselor
Greetings from the Pierre Laclede Honors College, a certificate program at the UMSL.
I hope the information found on this website sparks your interest and answers most of your questions about the program. The 2008-2009 school year marked the Honors College's 20th year of growth and service to the UMSL campus and community, offering students a unique learning environment that can be described as a small liberal arts college within a large university. Honors College students experience UMSL by taking courses that meet both core university requirements and some basic requirements in their major.
So what are the perks of being an Honors College student?
- 13:1 Student-to-Faculty Ratio: Small, seminar-style courses allow students to develop mentoring relationships with faculty, establish a strong peer network, and integrate themselves into the Honors and university community early in their academic career.
- Honors Scholarships: All students admitted in good standing are awarded renewable Pierre Laclede Honors College Merit of Phi Theta Kappa scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. If you plan to live on campus, we also have residential scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500. These scholarships are in addition to any scholarships awarded by UMSL and are based on your merit, not on your need.
- Innovative Honors Curriculum: Courses in the Honors College are writing-intensive and can fulfill General Education, major, and elective requirements. In addition to the Four-year program we also have a Two-year and a Two-year-plus program for transfer students allowing them to complete the Honors certificate without extending the time to degree.
- Internship & Research: Student participate in competitive internships and undergraduate research projects related to their major. These opportunities allow Honors College students to be competitive whether they are applying for graduate school or entering the job field.
- Leadership Development: Student have the opportunity to continue leadership initiatives through involvement in the PLHC Student Association and various other social and academic organizations.
