Zoom

Use Zoom for attending live classes from remote locations and/or playing back recorded class archives (if you don't attend the class in-person).

  1. Zoom is a real-time classroom that supports voice, video, white-boarding, content display with archive capabilities and application sharing. You will find a link in each module of our Canvas course site that will open the Zoom Live Classroom session (Soc. 1010 Zoom Monday and Wednesday 11-12:15 or Soc/CCJ 2180 Zoom Tuesday and Thursday 12:30-1:45 PM). Full documentation on using Zoom can be found at: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/categories/200101697-Getting-Started and https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us. Campus Technical support: 516-6034 can also help with some problems.
  2. Archived recordings of our Zoom sessions will be available as MP4 videos in the "Zoom Recordings and Attendance Threads page in each course module. These MP4's will playback on most any device, and can be downloaded, too.
  3. I recommend that you use Google Chrome as your web browser. IPhone users can also download the Zoom app for use on your mobile devices (the Android app isn't working to well, but you can try it, too). If you will be using Zoom, you'll need speakers (a headset is best). For attending a live class event via Zoom, it is best to have a microphone and hopefully, a webcam.
  4. You won't be able to access the live Zoom utility until I am logged in.  I'll try to be logged in about 10-15 minutes before class starts (10:50 AM for Soc. 1010 and 12:20 PM for Soc. 2180), the first time you use Zoom for our class, please try to log in about the same time--this will allow you to download the utility that needs to be installed on your computer and trouble-shoot any problems prior to our first class. When you plan on attending a live class via Zoom, please get logged on about 5 minutes prior to the start of class, so we'll all be ready to go.
  5. Here's a 5 minute overview of using Zoom--it's from Mygateway, but the process is basically the same with Canvas:

Roksworld:

Roksworld is one of my Internet sites that provides students with access to a variety of "class room only handouts" (news articles and other essays). Please note: page references in the feedback for tutor questions may not correspond with current textbooks. If you can't figure out why you got a particular question wrong on the tutor, contact the instructor or TAs. To access "Roksworld" students must use your UMSL SSO ID and password.

Accessing Online Resources:

Students have access to online resources from a variety of computing labs (see location information below) as well as special Kiosks, and the Cyber-Café in the Millennium Student Center. If you live in one of the campus dorms, or The Meadows, you can use an Ethernet card in your personal computer to hook-up directly to the campus network. Contact the Technology Support Center for assistance (516-6034) and visit http://gatewayid.umsl.edu/ for information on the user name and password you will need to access UMSL Internet services from home.

Canvas and Email:

Students are required to use the campus Canvas learning management system and student e-mail for this class

Your Gateway ID and Password: Your Gateway ID and password provide you with access to all online services at UM-St. Louis including Canvas, campus email, and many other services. To find your Gateway ID and password: Visit http://gatewayid.umsl.edu and click "Search for ID", or from the MyGateway login page (http://mygateway.umsl.edu) click on the "Gateway ID Search" button. Type in your student number and your Social Security Number and click on "Search." The next page will show your Gateway login ID.  For new students, you will have to choose a password the first time you access your account.
