Technology Requirements for Professor Keel's Classes

Read this page carefully. As a member of an online or "web-enhanced" course, you are expected to have access to the internet almost every day. If you have computing problems, it is your responsibility to address these problems, or come to campus to use the student computing labs. Problems with your computer or other technology issues are not excuses for any delays in meeting expectations and deadlines for the course. So, if you have a problem, get help in solving it immediately.

A. Technical Support:

B. The Student Help section of MyGateway. Support for features of MyGateway (e.g., overview of MyGateway, Pronto, Discussion Forums, etc.) are provided in the Student Help section. Note that there are a number of helpful links on the left side, as well as tutorials in the main portion of that page.

C. Computer Specifications: Blackboard (MyGateway) runs independent of the operating system. It relies on the internet browser and the plug-ins recommended below. Any computer with an up-to-date operating system, Windows, Mac or Linux, as long as the internet browser is up-to-date, will suffice for using MyGateway. I suggest that you use Google Chrome as your browser, especially when taking the exams. Information and access to browsers and a variety of technology help is provided here: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/mgwhelp/browser.html

This course requires you to be able to:

Use Zoom for attending live classes from remote locations and/or playing back recorded class archives (if you don't attend the class in-person).

  1. Zoom is a real-time classroom that supports voice, video, white-boarding, content display with archive capabilities and application sharing. You will find a link in each module of our Canvas course site that will open the Zoom Live Classroom session (Soc. 1010 Zoom Monday and Wednesday 11-12:15 or Soc/CCJ 2180 Zoom Tuesday and Thursday 12:30-1:45 PM). Full documentation on using Zoom can be found at: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/categories/200101697-Getting-Started and https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us. Campus Technical support: 516-6034 can also help with some problems.
  2. Archived recordings of our Zoom sessions will be available as MP4 videos in the "Zoom Recordings and Attendance Threads page in each course module. These MP4's will playback on most any device, and can be downloaded, too.
  3. I recommend that you use Google Chrome as your web browser. IPhone users can also download the Zoom app for use on your mobile devices (the Android app isn't working to well, but you can try it, too). If you will be using Zoom, you'll need speakers (a headset is best). For attending a live class event via Zoom, it is best to have a microphone and hopefully, a webcam.
  4. You won't be able to access the live Zoom utility until I am logged in.  I'll try to be logged in about 10-15 minutes before class starts (10:50 AM for Soc. 1010 and 12:20 PM for Soc. 2180), the first time you use Zoom for our class, please try to log in about the same time--this will allow you to download the utility that needs to be installed on your computer and trouble-shoot any problems prior to our first class. When you plan on attending a live class via Zoom, please get logged on about 5 minutes prior to the start of class, so we'll all be ready to go.
  5. Here's a 5 minute overview of using Zoom--it's from Mygateway, but the process is basically the same with Canvas:

Open and play the Panopto multimedia presentations for various tutorials (using Collaborate, Working in a Wiki, taking online tests). The first time you click on a Panopto file, you will be instructed to install the free Microsoft Silverlight. This is a very quick and easy installation process. If your computer doesn't automatically prompt you for the installation, go to the following website and click on the blue "Get Silverlight Now" button on the left side of your screen:
http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/

If you have other questions about viewing requirements for the Panopto presentations, you can review this information at the following site: http://support.panopto.com/Miscellaneous/Viewing_Requirements

Save, open and print pdf files. For this, you need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have Adobe Reader working on your computer, go to the following site for a free download and instructions: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Play videos. Click here: "Windows Media Files" if you need to download a free version of Windows Media player to play videos on your computer. Click here if you need to download Quicktime.

Play Flash files. Click here to download Flash.

Use the help and support resources listed in A, B, and C, above.
